Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation is provided in "Comments for the Editor”).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • The text, if submitted to a peer-reviewed section, is anonymized and has had the authors' names removed (in the manuscript and in the file properties).
  • The cover page contains all relevant author information.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

All submitted manuscripts must be prepared in accordance with APA 6th (the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association). Where available, URLs for the references should be provided.

Manuscripts can be written in English, German, French, or Italian. If English is used: Spelling can be US or UK English so long as usage is consistent.

Manuscripts should be a maximum of 9 000 words in length (including the abstract and all references, tables, figures, appendices). However, exceptions to this maximum, duly reasoned and demonstrated, are possible. In this case, please add the explanation to “Comments for the Editor” when submitting your manuscript. Moreover, authors can submit supplementary material that will be published as online appendix.

The manuscript contains an abstract (between 150 and 200 words) and a maximum of 8 keywords (e.g., journalism, critical discourse analysis, populism, media effects).

Formatting: The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses).

We suggest that articles contain no more than 6 display items (figures and / or tables). Exceptions are possible if duly justified. All illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. Tables should present new information rather than duplicating what is in the text. Readers should be able to interpret the table without reference to the text. Please supply editable files.

Titles and section headings should be clear and brief. Lengthy quotations in the text (exceeding 40 words) should be indented.

Define abbreviations the first time they are mentioned in the abstract and in the text.

The text, if submitted to a peer-reviewed section, is anonymized. Please remove all author names and institutional information from manuscripts, so as to enable blind peer review. If an author is cited, "Author" and year are used in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of author's name, paper title, etc. The author's name has also been removed from the file properties, which in Microsoft Word is found in the File menu.

Author details: Please submit a separate cover page with author information (including: title of the submission; full name, affiliation, postal address and e-mail address of all authors). Where available, please also include ORCID iDs and social media handles (Facebook, Twitter etc.).
